Canada D'eh 2007 an Overwhelming Success

The Canadian Society had the big annual beach party to celebrate Canada ’s 140th birthday on Saturday June 30 near Bashiwan beach. We got out the barbecues, picnic tables, beer coolers and swimsuits for the now famous Canada D’eh beach party, and it was a super hot day.

The event was a great success with just over 3,000 people attending, Canada Déh 2008 will be even bigger and better and the date has been set for June 28 th, 2008.

Guests enjoyed a fun-filled day of beach activities, volleyball, tug o’ war, kids activities, 7 great live bands, fireworks, and of course a big Canada D’eh cake!

This was an all volunteer activity with over 100 people kicking in to run the various contests and events, security, gates, staff 2 bars, and other challenging activities!

Special thanks go out to the TAVERN one of the main sponsors of the event but also for their efficient operation of the BBQ. Taiwan Beer also did a great job of keeping the glasses full.

We had 7 live bands that all did a great job, - 7 Live bands:  BoPoMoFo, ABS, NEON, COACH, RIDDIM OUTLAWZ, Jahmecca Soundcrew, and  David Foster Syndicate .They are all great entertainers and put on an excellent show.

MFA put on a football (or was it a soccer??) clinic for kids that was enjoyed by all, The CIHL Chinese Taipei International Hockey League also showed some guests how to shoot a hockey puck, The Canadian Alumni Network also did a great job operating the Volleyball tournament. There were also belly dancers, Aboriginal dancers (even dancing to The Tragically Hip at times), plus into the evening there was also a pig roast and a barbecued goat there really was something for everyone!

Ron MacIntosh , Executive Director of CTOT, executive director of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei , spoke at the event and gave us the official “happy birthday” greeting. This was followed by Pipi’s team who set off a stream of an incredible 30 minute fireworks show that won’t be forgotten.

ICRT also did a great job promoting the event the week leading up to it, with “Canadian week”. This included trivia, interviews with sponsors, The CTOT team, and many of the event organizers, the promotion of the event really helped attendance, a big thanks to the ICRT team!

Other major sponsors included. Manulife, Canadian Trade Office in Taipei , Air Canada , Bombardier, COSTCO Warehouse, Crown World-Wide Movers, HOLA stores, Jason’s Supermarket, LUXY, Taipei County Government, Taiwan Beer, The Tavern, and Smirnoff Ice. See here for more sponsor info: sponsors and supporters

Exciting prizes were also given out, Air Canada gave out a ticket from Hong-Kong to any city in Canada , Landis Taipei Hotel provided a deluxe corner suite weekend package, and Alexander Health Club gave out passes, www.englishquest.tw gave out several free accounts to its English language program for children too. Also a big thanks you to Eccos that provided sandals, coupons and t-shirts for our volunteers.

Included with the ticket there were also coupons from Capones, The Tavern, Crown Worldwide Mover, Carnegies, Laser Treks, Grandma Nitti’s, Luxy, and English Quest.

Our VOLUNTEERS were really fantastic, with more than 100 signing up ahead of the event and helping out all day and into the night, we apologize that it was so hot but we were certainly able to cool off at The Tavern later as they also hosted our Volunteer Thank-you party.

We also had the participation of several groups that further enhanced the sense of community, including The Canadian Alumni Network which sold over 300 tickets; and thanks to CAPT who promoted it almost daily to its members.

Thank you too to our Society founder, Pierre Loisel, and his neighbors for allowing us to use their property again this year. It was truly a great event to be a part of.

See you at the beach on June 28, 2008!!
