Surfing in Canada

Canada is a beautiful and diverse country no doubt. For this reason it is one of the most desirable places to go to in North America. Some of the most common recreational activities in Canada include ice-skating, hiking and fishing. One activity that most people do not always associate Canada with is surfing but the reality is that it is very much alive here. The following are some of the best surfing spots in Canada.

Lawrence town Beach in Nova Scotia

This particular spot is just a little over twenty minutes away from Halifax. The people who live in this part of the country are quite fond of this beach and therefore you are likely to find quite a number of them whenever you choose to show up. Chances are that you will also find a good number of surfers at any one time.

An important piece of information to have in mind is that it can get quite cold and therefore bare-chest surfing could prove a bit uncomfortable; a wet suit might therefore come in handy. The biggest waves appear during the winter season.

Nootka Island

There are surfers who love crowds and then there are those who prefer quieter surfing spots. If you belong to the latter group then Nootka Island is one destination you might be interested in visiting. The beaches here are set against a backdrop of trees creating a serene and seemingly untouched natural setting. For average surfers, the spring and fall seasons offer the best waves. However if you are a very experienced surfer, you might want to make your way here sometime during winter.

Martinique Beach

The people who live in the areas surrounding Martinique Beach consider it an ideal place for surfing. It is actually referred to as a paradise for surfers. The waves in this part of Canada are considered quite decent for most surfers. Again it is quite important to wear a wetsuit because the water is quite cold. It is not rare to see a few surfers here and there even during the coldest of winters.

Ingonish Beach

Just outside of Cape Breton is Ingonish Beach; this particular spot is not just for any other surfer. If you are going to conquer the waves in this part of the country then you will have to be a seasoned surfer. This is because the waters here can be quite unpredictable at times; it might be relatively calm one moment and quite rough the next. The best time of year to come surfing here is during the winter months and just like in the previous cases, a wetsuit is necessary.

This is actually considered to be one of the best surfing spots, not just in Canada but the whole of North America too. By no means are things quiet in this part of the country as there are always surfers trying to catch a wave. One attractive feature of Tofino is its long coastline (35km) with the entire stretch offering some decent waves. Here too you will need a wetsuit but the temperatures are not as cold as in most other spots.
