For many North Americans, and not only for them, Canada represents, especially during winter, the favorite vacation destination. Canada is a huge country with breath taking landscapes, a country that seems to be the perfect place for practicing all sorts of winter sports.

Winter Holidays in CanadaRight at the border between Alberta and British Columbia you will see the Canadian Rockies, a massive chain of mountains which are covering parts of the U.S.A. and parts of Canada. The mountains in Canada, say the geologists, are very different in comparison with the American ones, as they have been heavily glaciated, and the result is what we can see now: sharp peaks with “U” valleys between them. On the other hand, the American mountains are not so sharp; they are much more rounded. There are numerous resorts in the Rockies, for example Calgary or Edmonton to name two of them.

Once arrived in the Rockies, you can book one of the wonderful lodges. Buffalo Mountain Lodge is just an example, a nice lodge that was awarded three Green Keys by the Green Key Eco Rating Program. This shows a lot of dedication when it comes to protecting the environment.

One of the first stops you should make while you visit the Rockies is Banff. Banff National Park is the first national park of Canada, being located close to Calgary. You will enter an area of 6,641 square kilometers / 4,128 square miles with unique mountain landscapes, a place that is visited every year by millions of people, who come to marvel at the clear blue waters of Lake Louise.

Banff is the perfect place to ski. Even if you are a skilled skier or you simply want to start learning, Banff is the perfect place, as there are many ski schools where you can enroll, as well as numerous slopes and ski trails that you can try. You do not have to bring all the needed equipment with you, as there are several places where you can rent the required ski gear.

Waterton Lakes National Park is another interesting place to visit while you spend your vacation in Canada. Waterton is well known for its hiking trails, which are destined for people having various skills and exercise. The resort is perfect for cross country skiing and snowshoeing during winter. There are about ten hotels, several restaurants and many beautiful lodges that can be rented. The resort is open all year long.

Fairmont Hot Springs would represent an interesting possibility for your next winter vacation, as the resort is open all year long. The hot springs are a legendary attraction, being the largest of this kind in Canada. The pools are filled with hot, mineral rich water, and people come and spend their time here all day long.

These pools are cleaned and prepared for the next day each night. Even swimming lessons are organized at the pools, so your kids (and not only them) could spend a great time there. The water at Fairmont is well known for increasing metabolism, accelerating the healing process, soothing muscles, improving blood circulation and detoxifying the lymphatic system.

The ski slopes have opened since the 21st of December. The date was set considering the fact that Fairmont is located on the warm side of the Rockies. The ski area that was created around the resort is ideal not only for beginners, but also for down hillers that have more experience. Four of the world class winter sports resorts are just one or two hours away from Fairmont. Aquafina Snow Planet in Fairmont has been recently improved and is considered to be one of the best places in Columbia Valley where people of all ages can learn to ski.
